La Plata County Diversion Program

At La Plata Youth Services (LPYS), our Diversion Program offers young people an alternative to the traditional legal process. Guided by our core values of social justice, integrity, compassion, creativity, and collaboration, we empower youth through restorative justice practices that focus on accountability, healing, and community connection—without punitive measures.

Instead of emphasizing legal consequences and deterrence, restorative justice focuses on repairing harm and building mutual understanding that supports reconciliation and growth. This approach helps youth recognize the impact of their actions and take meaningful steps to repair harm done to their community, their families, and themselves.

How Diversion Works

Diversion is available to youth facing felony, misdemeanor, or petty offense charges. Youth work closely with a dedicated Youth Advocate who provides individualized support and case management. Advocates meet with youth weekly throughout their case plan, guiding them through tasks designed to repair harm. Once these tasks are completed, charges are dismissed or dropped.
