Unchain My HEART

La Plata Youth Services is proud to announce our fundraising event Unchain My HEART: a multi-media youth art exhibit and silent auction. We will be holding this event on February 13th at Open Shutter Gallery. All submissions by youth artists are due on January 8th. Digital photo copies of the art must be submitted by December 19th.  All participating artists must submit an entry form.

Entries are limited to three works per person. All youth may price their artwork how they wish, and will receive all the proceeds from the sale of their artwork. Fundraising for La Plata Youth Services will be primarily based on proceeds from our silent auction. Youth may donate art to LPYS, but are not required to donate their art nor the proceeds from the sale of that artwork.

Until then, we are hosting a workshop on December 13th to help youth create some works of art. This workshop will be at the Durango Arts Center from 1-3. We will have an art instructor/art therapist to assist youth in the creative process.

Please download these documents if you or someone you know is interested in participating:

New Everyday Mural!

On the last weekend of September and the first weekend of October, youth affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado, Boys and Girls Club, and La Plata Youth Services participated in painting the newest mural at the Everyday Gas Station on 8th Ave and College. Youth of all ages participated in the making of this miraculous collaboration art piece signifying change and the many different light and dark aspects to life. One side symbolizes darkness, and the other symbolizes joyous things such as hiking, skiing, and river tubing.

This project was also a collaboration between the three organizations that made it happen. We would like to thank BBBS and Boys and Girls Club of Durango for allowing us to contribute and participate!

CHECK IT OUT!

Summer is Here!

This year La Plata Youth Services has a summer program that will keep youth engaged, mindful, and active.  We have developed a program that runs an experiential education outing at the beginning of the week, and follows up with a community service day at the end of the week.  Both days are connected by educational content and are designed to keep the youth focused on a theme and to place ideology, theory, and practice in an understandable context for them to reflect upon. This summer we are focusing on many themes: Ecosystems and Sustainable Agriculture, Hydrology, Equestrian experiential learning and therapy, goal setting and overcoming obstacles, Self exploration and Identity, Community, self-expression and art, and Cultural awareness/sensitivity.

We will be including many other agencies and their youth populations as well.  Included in our summer program will be youth involved in La Plata Youth Services, Senate Bill 94 Pretrial Services, Probation Department, San Juan BOCES, and Durango 9-R School District.  All events and outings will be supervised by staff and volunteers from these organizations and agencies.
